The indoor air handler sits inside the house, most often in a utility closet, attic, or basement, and it pulls warm air from the living space across a coil that conditions it before sending it back through the vents. The outdoor condenser unit sits on a pad beside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil.

A copper refrigerant line set runs between those two units, carrying refrigerant back and forth as the system operates. The thermostat mounts on an interior wall and is the control point for the whole system, telling the equipment when to run and at what target temperature.
