The outdoor condenser unit sits on a concrete pad beside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil, the mechanical core of the system. Inside, the air handler or furnace cabinet stands in a utility space, closet, or attic and moves conditioned air through the home. These are the two main pieces a contractor puts in place.

The evaporator coil mounts directly above the air handler and works in tandem with the outdoor unit.
